Composers' Competition 2010

The competition is now closed and the winner was announced on September 17th at a Presentation Evening held at and hosted by Truro College. Entries were submitted from across the country. The winner, Patrick J. Lee from West Yorkshire, was awarded the £1000 prize.

Entries were of a very high standard and were written for a wide variety of male voice repertoire types.

Some composers entered more than one composition (one composer entered three compositions).

The next competition will be run in 2012 in preparation for the 2013 Festival. If you want some further details of what is expected, download the 2010 Composers' Competition details and application form here (.doc 109kb)). Some minor changes are expected for 2012.

The winner was Patrick J Lee for his composition "Dust".

It was chosen by Jeffrey Wynn Davies because:

"it is immediately attractive to the concert listener and sufficiently challenging also to be used for competition purposes; the text is substantial, well chosen and skilfully used;

the piano writing supports the choral texture well, and should allow choirs with more modest forces to perform the piece;

by the same token, the lowest of the three bass/baritone parts is optional – a very useful and flexible initiative - and there is some doubling of voice parts elsewhere from time to time."

Dust is now avaialble for download. Click here to visit that website for more information.

A special commendation was given to Elizabeth Sidebotham for her composition "Oh Puss Number One", a "great addition to the concert repertoire". This is also available in inspection copy format prior to publication, from the Festival Office.
