The 2013 Festival, 2nd-6th May: TERMS & CONDITIONS for Competiton Participation The 2013 Terms and Conditions are also avaialble for download by clicking here (Word 1997-2003 format) 1. ELIGIBILITY (for the attention of competing choirs only) 1.1 The International Competitions are not obligatory but choirs are encouraged to take part. Two competitions will be held during Saturday 4th May (daytime) in the Hall for Cornwall in Truro. 1.2 The categories will be: choirs/ensembles of 40 voices and under; choirs of 41 voices and over. 1.3 A choir should have been in existence for at least one calendar year prior to the Festival (and must be able, if asked, to substantiate that). 1.4 Unchanged (boys) voice choirs will not be accepted into the competitions in 2013. 1.5 All members of a choir, except the conductor and accompanist, must be amateurs (i.e. people who do not earn their livelihood as singers). 1.6 No person may compete as a member of more than one choir in the same category and a choir can only compete in one category. 1.7 The Festival reserves the right to limit the number of entries for each category. 1.8 The Festival reserves the right to cancel a category if it feels that there have been insufficient entries. 1.9 The Festival reserves the right to alter the timetable according to the number of entries received for each category. 1.10 Adjudicators’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding any aspect of their deliberations. 1.11 All adjudicator comments sheets will be made available to choirs no later than three weeks after the Festival. 2. REPERTOIRE 2.1 Repertoire for the competition is at the discretion of Musical Directors. There is no set piece. 2.2 The competition programme must not exceed 12 minutes of singing time. Marks will be deducted where time is not used effectively. 2.3 Further time is added by the Festival organisers to the 12 minute singing time to account for applause and for choir members getting on and off the stage. 2.4 The programme must contain at least one unaccompanied piece. 2.5 Five copies of each item sung in competition must be received by the Festival Office for use by the adjudication panel no later than 28th February 2013. Photocopies will only be accepted when accompanied by the full, written authority of the copyright holder. The Festival maintains the right to retain one set of the music for archive purposes. 2.6 Adjudicators will assess and allocate marks on: a. performance quality; b. technical difficulty; c. the variety of musical styles included in the programme; d. the range of period from which the music is selected; e. the success of the choir’s repertoire in terms of audience appeal and how well the choir communicates with the audience. 2.7 Choirs should consider including works by contemporary composers. 2.8 Changes to submitted competition repertoire will not be considered after 28th February 2013. 3. PRIZES 3.1 In each competition, prizes will be awarded as follows: 1st Prize £1000; 2nd Prize £400; 3rd Prize £200. In addition, trophies will be presented for the best choir overall, the best UK choir and the best Cornish choir in each category and overall. 3.2 An international jury will judge each competition. Each member of the adjudication panel will provide a written adjudication for all competing choirs. 3.3 Only prizes and awards listed above will be made. No others will be awarded.
